Possibilities: visual arts 2-D, 3-D, writings and poetry of the land and its representation and importance to the past, present, future of Americans.
I hope to put together a presentation (for a library presentation? or an Alaskan History grade 3-5 course I do the art element for?) during school and/or during Summer Reading Program at library. Possibly also an art exhibition of pieces created "in the style" of Alaska native artists, using individual skills and twists to original work, using original art as a springboard for creativity.
So far I can see that I will be using Teacher Domain and looking at the teacher participants' entries, plus googling for art; art history; finding on-line resources, magazines, videos/dvds of artists and art as well as the geoscience of Alaska.. I need resources to use digitally for the art.
Digital resources will help put together an outline and final presentation on my own computer -- something I can add to and edit over time. Effective teaching methods are of course important for a presentation which is welcomed, and useable by students for choosing their own projects (school or outside school), particularly in the art field.
Alaska is RICH in arts, and working in the style of artists along with learning/knowing about the geoscience history and present changes/challenges should invite political/journalistic expression through the arts, enabling even young students to make a difference in the way Alaska looks at itself as well as the way others see Alaska.
Being a librarian, my instincts tell me to start with books, and I have no idea how to present them digitally. I need a nudge to find digital references online or elsewhere?. Thanks, Clay, for the suggestion to look into using my "nook" (Barnes and Noble's "Kindle" ebook.) I'm researching its possibilities tonight.
Resources I hope to research during the 2nd week:
- AK Council on the Arts, including historical newsletters
- video catalog at Anchorage Lussac Library
- books on Alaskan artists and art; Canadian artists and art; NW Coast art;
- native schools of art
- Alaska State Historical library
Hi Kate,
ReplyDeleteThis is Dan in Petersburg. We have probably run into each other before... Haines Fair or the Folk Festival? ... the years slip by. Yes I know Polly Lee quite well - I am just wrapping up a stint with our arts council and we just had a big celebration honoring her Governor's Achievement Award. And yes, we have two very nice poles right in downtown Petersburg, carved about 8 years ago.
